Legal Question in Family Law in Indiana

Temporary custody of my great niece

My niece is going to have to go away for awhile. I know that she can write out on paper leaving her daughter in my care and having it notorized. I also know that there is a form I can get off the state website regarding school issues. I don't necessarily have to have guardianship. My question is, if there is a paper notorized leaving her child in my care to be able to get medical treatment and able to make decisions for the child and we do have the paper regarding school issues, is this a legal form.

Re: Temporary custody of my great niece

The law allows a parent to give anyone a parental power of attorney for a period of 60 days. Under that power of attorney you have all authority of the parent except the power to consent to the child's marriage or the child's adoption. The statute in question is IC 29-3-9-1. Such a document would be a legal document and should be prepared by an attorney.
