Legal Question in Landlord & Tenant Law in Indiana

I am receiving a bill from a previous landlord for over $1000 that is for an apartment that I vacated over 8 months ago. I did finish my lease out. They have rented out the apartment since I vacated. They are saying that the carpet has a stain that cannot be removed, one set of blinds has a piece missing, a door has a problem with it, and that we never returned our keys. All of these problems were problems before we moved in that they assured us would be taken care of before anything was moved into the apartment, and the keys were returned to them, but they are still claiming that they were not. I guess my question is if they can try to charge me for something that is 8 months old and that is honestly their fault. Thank you.

The best thing for you to do would be appear in court on the complaint. Do you have pictures of the place before you moved in? If so, use those to assist you. If not, it would be your word against theirs. How long were you in the apartment? Some of that could also be compared to normal usage and wear. Call our office if you'd like to know more about how we can help you.
