laws landlords required to follow

what type of laws are landlords required to follow when it comes to safety of tenants. specifically are they required to provide fire detectors?

If there is no state statute requiring the installation of fire detectors in the apartment, it could be a HUD requirement and/or a local ordinance of the city, town, municipality or county where the property is located. If you have a local zoning authority with enforcement responsibility, contact that agency to look at your unit for compliance.
