Legal Question in Landlord & Tenant Law in Iowa

Signed a lease for an apartment starting at noon on Thursday. Plans changed, and I no longer need the apartment, so I went in on Friday to cancel the lease. The receptionist told me that because I signed the lease, I was locked in for the remainder (a year) unless I could find a subleaser myself. I asked if they could offer mine to the next person who wanted an apartment, and she stated that they would need to fill up all their vacancies before moving to the subleasing list.

Is there anything I can do to get out of it legally, especially since my check has not even cashed for my deposit and first months rent? And the fact that nothing was ever moved in, nor will any utilities be used.

Well, you did sign the lease. You can always cancel the check and let them take you to court. Oh wait. That'd wreck your credit. Get yourself a lawyer and let them deal with this mess.
