Legal Question in Family Law in Kentucky

Child support court summons

I now live in Nevada, and have received a summons in Covington, KY. If I tried to get there I would lose my job. Would I be picked up by the law, if I can't make it?

Re: Child support court summons

This isn't as straight-forward a question as you may think. If the child your pay support on is in Kentucky and there was already a case before the court in Kentucky, then that court retains subject matter jurisdiction. What you are really asking about, though, is personal jurisdiction. Just by receiving a summons, does not create personal jurisdiction. For example, if it just came to you by first class mail, then I could make an argument that you have not been properly served and so personal jurisdiction is lacking.

Now, the smartest thing to do, would be to retain a Kentucky attorney to appear and either challenge personal jurisdiction or at least insure child support is set fairly. That would be far less expensive that you showing up yourself.
