Legal Question in Credit and Debt Law in Louisiana

I owe a number of doctors money and i send each one $20. per month. my question is can they legally force me to pay the whole amount at once?

most of them will accept my payments but one has a collection agency calling and harrassing me for the full amount.

Yes, they can. It is a common misperception that a creditor cannot institute legal action against you so long as you are making some payment. That is not the case. A creditor may collect the entire amount and may file suit for that amount. Be aware that if the creditor does file suit under the Open Account Statute, he may be entitled to collect the entire amount due, as well as attorney's fees and court costs.

The best thing to do is to work out a payment plan with the creditor. The worst thing you can do is to ignore them.

I agree with Mr. Lambert and would add that at any time you can tell the collection agency to stop calling you and they must stop. Record the conversation when you tell them to stop, asking them to identify themselves and if they call back, then turn them in to the government.....which means nothing happens. But it is suppose to stop.
