Legal Question in Personal Injury in Louisiana

Is it commonplace for an attorney to request for a client to take out a secured loan to hire an economist? Currently have a personal injury lawsuit and our attorney has decided to hire an economist, but is requesting that we sign for a secured loan for the economist's fees. We have been told by the attorney that the loan is through a bank the attorney firm works with and he says that we are responsible for paying only the interest on the loan until the case is settled.

It is a method personal injury attorneys employ to insure that you have the experts you need to win the case. You could certainly hire the economist if you have an alternative method of payment. However, if you are unsure of what is going on at any point in this matter, you need to have your attorney explain everything to your satisfaction. If the attorney is unable to do so, you need to seek other counsel. When you hire an attorney, you are in control of your case. The attorney is there to counsel, advise and work in your best interests. If you feel that there is something unethical in an attorney's handling of a matter, you can contact the Louisiana Attorney Disciplinary Board.
