Legal Question in Personal Injury in Louisiana

dog killed neighbors dog

we have an olde english bulldogge that we keep in the house while we are at work. somehow she got out while we were gone and killed the neighbor's small yorkie. We have never seen any sort of aggressive behavior from our dog. we tried to apologize and all he could do was cuss at me, my brother and mother. our dog is sweet in nature and this is a strange behavior for this. my mom and brother are terrified and feel threatened by our neighbor now and he said he was going to kill our dog. what steps do i need to take in this situation. my mom and bother are both upset about this and are scared of what he may do to them, my wife and me, and my dogs.

Re: dog killed neighbors dog

This is a no win situation. Under the law, you are liable for your dog and the damage it causes. I think the best thing for you to do is make an offer to your neighbor for any costs they incur as a result of the death of their dog plus a few extra dollars. Make it clear to them that any threats against against your family or your dog are inappropriate. Express your heartfelt sympathy and apologies. As far as keeping your dog, you better make sure that the dog stays on your property or is on a leash at all times. Good luck.
