The timeline of events are as follows:

One party files a complaint against one or more defendants. In your case 2 defendants. The court then issues a writ of summons for each. You must then have the writ of summons, along with the complaint, served upon those defendants. Whom ever you use to serve the defendants must prepare and file an Affidavit of Serice with the court. Once served, the defendants generally have 30 days in which to file an Answer to your complaint. If defendants are out of state or the county, they then have 60 days in which to file their answer. If the defendants fail to file an answer in a timely manner, the court will do nothing, and you must file a Request for an Order of Default to have things start moving again in the court. If you need help with that, please feel free to call me at 410 847-9075.
