Legal Question in Civil Litigation in Maryland

I was caught shoplifting any item for $36. I have no prior record. Will i go to jail? how long does it stay on my record?? loss prevention said all i have to do is pay for item up to 3X the value after receiving letter from corporate office of department store.

If you pay them they won't press charges. Otherwise you will be prosecuted, but would be eligible for probation before judgment, which would avoid a conviction on your record, but would result in your being on probation and probably paying a fine and court costs exceeding the amount the store is looking for.
