Legal Question in Civil Litigation in Maryland

My friend has a car that was paid for by money from her grandfather. The money was given to her mom to get the car but the mom put the car in her name.

My friend has been driving it exclusively for over 6 months and the mother is threatening to take her car for personal unrelated reasons.

We were told that in California, because my friend had been driving it for that 6 month period exclusively that the car was now legally hers. What I wanted to know is this true in Maryland too?

Ownership is determined by whose name is on the title. I am not a CA lawyer but what you were told about their law is hard to believe. Every state has a titling and registration system.
