Legal Question in Civil Litigation in Maryland

Harassment

I had a brief relationship with a married man.His wife was cheating on him as well. They have since reconciled and they are now telling everyone half of story. They are implying that everything was MY fault and now I have lost numerous friends and I feel uncomfortable going into town.Their son goes to school with my son and is harassing him at school and at sporting events. He tells my son that I am a slut and a whore and threatens to beat him up. I don't want to sink to their level and tell the rest of story which would pass their half of the blame to them, but I can no longer deal with the ignorant comments to both my son and myself. How should I go about making them stop? Not everything they are saying is true. I have already contacted the school, but nothing is being done.

Re: Harassment

This is a case of slander, at least as to the untruthful part of what is being said about you. You could file a lawsuit, but that would undoubtedly bring more attention to the situation, and you would undergo considerable expense and anguish during the process. Even if you win your case, you'd have to attach property in order to collect the judgment. Perhaps a strongly worded letter from an attorney to them will persuade them to stop the defamatory statements and harrassment.
