Legal Question in Personal Injury in Maryland

I live in Maryland, and my driver's license has been expired for many years.I called the MVA to see what needed to be done to get it again.I was informed that I have a judgment against me from the year 1987,that I know nothing about. What can I do?

First, you should go to the court where the judgment was entered and find out the details. If the judgment was never paid, under MD law it can't be enforced now because of its age. It may be that the judgment is against someone with a similar name, because it seems strange that you didn't know about the suit in the first place and didn't receive a notice of the judgment being entered against you afterward. It's possible that the judgment was paid by insurance if it was from an auto accident, though it seems you would know about that if it was your insurance. But if that happened and the person who received the judgment never filed a notice of satisfaction with the court, it would still be treated as open in the court records. Once you find out more about it, go back to MVA and see what needs to be done.
