Give my hoem back to the lender

Is there any way I can voluntarily stop paying my mortgage and return the property to the mortgage company? I live in Maryland.

If the lender agrees, you can deed it to them in lieu of foreclosure. Otherwise, if you stop paying they will foreclose. In the latter case, if the sale price at foreclosure does not satisfy the mortgage debt, you will owe the deficiency. In the present market, most homes are worth more than the mortgage amount, so you may be better off selling it, as that may generate a profit and at least won't ruin your credit.
