Legal Question in Business Law in Massachusetts

Missed appointment fee

I own a business in MA and have had a rash of missed appointments. I recently bought the business and the previous owner charged a $15 fee. I know another business owner who bills the whole fee for missed appointments. With proper notice (printed on business card and on sign in shop) is this legal to do in Massachusetts?

I just feel I should not have to lose money due to people being inconsiderate.

Re: Missed appointment fee

I do not necessarily know that there is any law directly on point with your situation. However, much like charging interest, you can only make the change prospectively. In other words, I do believe you can charge a fee for a no show that has already occured, but you can for future appointments provided you give your clientele notice of the new charge.
