Legal Question in Civil Rights Law in Massachusetts

Definition/Explanation

Hello---

I'm doing more abbreviated case briefs for my CAGS in School Law and I'm doing Mayer vs. Monroe County. The district court in that case granted a ''summary judgement'' to the defendants, so ''we must accept Mayer's version of events''---what is a summary judgement and why do we then have to ''accept'' or ''assume'' Mayer's version? Do summary judgements seal part of the case?

Thank you---
