Legal Question in Constitutional Law in Massachusetts

Speedy Trial

I was arrested on 11-13-01 for drunk driving. I was put in jail for 4 months awaiting trial when I requested I be allowed bail (there was no bail set), or be allowed out of jail while waiting to go to trial. I was put on an electronic monitoring device in March 2002. It is now October 2002 (I'm still on the ''bracelet''for the last six months) and I just found out that my court date will be January 29, 2003.

I've been unable to work or re-enter college because of curfews imposed by the bracelet. My court appointed lawyer does not return my calls and seems rather incompetent. My life is in Limbo and I'd like to get this resolved as soon as possible. My question is; Am I being denied the right to a speedy trial? By the time I go to court, a full year and a month will have passed that I've been waiting for my case to be heard. Thank you for any advice you can offer.

Re: Speedy Trial

In Mass each county has an organization that contracts with Court appointed attorneys; if you cannot find out who they are call Committee for Public Counsel Services at (617) 482-6212

Explain that you would like to have the telelephone & name of the person in your county.
