Legal Question in Discrimination Law in Massachusetts

Title IX

My school has no womens lacrosse team, and another girl and I were given permission to play on the mens team. Today at a game, we were told that we couldnt play. The reason the opposing coach gave was this: because their school has both a mens and a womens team, girls were not allowed to play on the mens team, even though some had asked permission to do so. Therefore, the coach said he didnt want there to be an issue, meaning he didnt want the girls to be jealous, and so the two of us couldnt play. My understanding of Title IX leads me to believe that this was illegal. Am i right?
