Legal Question in Real Estate Law in Massachusetts

I bought my boyfriend a puppy for his birthday. he kept it at his house because i am not allowed to have pets at my apartment. He shared the house with his ex girlfriend. But for the past couple of months he has been staying at my apartment. He is trying to move out of the house and into his own place but te ex won't give up the dog. What do we do?

Hopefully your boyfriend registered the puppy and took him to the vet so that he has records proving ownership. I would always advise trying to talk something like this out, but if you wanted to you could always file a small claims action. Before you take it that far, first get an attorney to send a demand letter, stating your intentions to sue if necessary. Hopefully, that will be as far as it needs to go.

**Please be advised that the above response has not created an attorney-client relationship.

I would recommend that the parties sit down and attempt to mediate this dispute with the help of an attorney, if you cannot agree on your own. It sounds as though the dog is yours, and the ex-girlfriend has stolen the dog. But if you gave the dog to the ex-girlfriend, you may have a more difficult time.
