Legal Question in Wills and Trusts in Massachusetts

My dad is hospitalized with demetia caused by Alzheimer's and will need long term care. Is there any way to keep his estate from being all spent on the facility? He did not create a durable power of attorney nor a healthcare proxy and is a resident of Massachusetts. Thank you.
