Fees for missed appointments

Someone told me that businesses cannot charge a missed appointment fee. For example, I missed a couselor's appt and did not cancel within the 24 hours. Can they still charge me for 1/2 of that visit?

If the office policy was known to you that missed appointments would be charged, then it is legal and appropriate to bill.
