Legal Question in Credit and Debt Law in Michigan

Financial harassment

I owe a neighbor for roofing services. He showed up at my door with another neighbor who claims she is a Paralegal and is representing the Roofer. She claimed I must pay the Roofer or she will garnish my wages. She also stated she was going to tell all our neighbors that I owe the Roofer and won't pay. Is she violating any credit protection laws by telling my financial business to the neighbors if she claims to represent him? And, is this misconduct by a 'retired' Paralegal?

Re: Financial harassment

Yes, she is violating the laws - consumer protection laws, practicing law without a license, and holding herself out as an attorney, defamation of character, etc.

Furthermore, the process to garnish wages is a long one. A claim must be filed with the court. There will be notice of hearing and a hearing to be held. There must be a creditor's examination to find out your financial information for garnishment purposes, and thereafter, the creditor must procure an order to garnish your wages. Procuring an order to garnish is a process in and of itself. The whole ordeal can take several months.
