Legal Question in Criminal Law in Michigan

My friend puched another kid

Last week, my friend punched another kid in the face and the person who got punched wants to report it to the police. The person who got punched jumped my friend about 2 months before with two of his other friends and punched him repeatedly. What should my friend do if he is reported to the police and how much legal trouble can he get into?

The police are not interested in assaults among assaultive young men unless they're reported immediately.

In the unlikely event your friend is contacted by police, he should realize that the defense of "he hit me first" doesn't even work in kindergarten.

He doesn't have to talk to the police and he should not.

Your friend should not speak to the police without an attorney present. It is very possible that the cops could file criminal charges. Your friend should set aside funds to be able to hire an attorney in case he's arrested.
