Re: back-pay child support

Possibly, unless he gave up his parental rights and someone else adopted you, or he paid support to someone else and you don't know about it. You would need a family law lawyer to assist you, and would need to know where he is located, working, living, etc. or pay for an investigator to find him, to see if it is worth it. You'd also have to verify that he did not provide child support to your mother, or another guardian.

Michigan requires that you establish paternity by your 18th birthday. Is he listed on your birth certificate, or was paternity never established? If it wasn't, you are likely barred from collecting.

There are several issues here that a lawyer would have to investigate in order to determine what your chances are.

Please feel free to contact me if you'd like to pursue this matter. I have a private investigator in the office next door to me who only handles family law and child custody/support matters, who would also be able to assist you.

Thanks.
