Legal Question in Family Law in Michigan

A divorce with only one attorney

When my ex-husband and I were divorcing, he promised that the attorney he hired was just to draft the divorce. I could not afford an attorney. The way his attorney explained things to me from papers is not what they truly meant. How can I prove this in court at an evidentiary hearing?

Also, is there a statute of limitations on divorce claims?

Re: A divorce with only one attorney

Are you attempting to set aside the divorce judgment? If so, it may be extremely difficult unless you can show that the lawyer was representing both sides. I'm sure the lawyer covered his butt by having you sign something that indicated that he was only representing your husband. A mistake concerning your understanding of the repercussions concerning the language of the judgment is going to be very difficult to set aside. You can always get an inexpensive lawyer except now, to repair matters may be prohibitively expensive. Bill Stern 248-353-9400
