Legal Question in Family Law in Michigan

Is my divorce valid?

My ex-husband did a DIY divorce, but failed to notify me of the final court date; nor did he give me a copy of the final divorce paperwork. He filed papers with the court stating that he did indeed give me copies of this paperwork. I have issues with the way the divorce ended up, and problems with the settlements. Is this divorce legal?

Your divorce is indeed valid until the judge invalidates it. However, you must act quickly or you may lose your right to re-open the case. Contact an experienced family law attorney at once.

Re: Is my divorce valid?

Apparently, you also did a DIY divorce because you either did not answer it or did answer it yourself. If you didnot answer it, you are probably in default and may not have standing to object to anything. Either way, you have to make a motion to set aside the divorce and raise the lack of notice with the court. As you can see, these do it yourself divorces are many times more trouble than if you hired an inexpensive lawyer in the first place. William S. Stern
