Legal Question in Family Law in Michigan

My niece is involved in a child custody case. She lives in Michigan and the father lives in Minnesota while he attends school. Their daughter is 7 years old and has seen her father maybe 4 times. He has never paid a dime in child support and was granted only supervised visits at my niece's discretion. Three months ago he and his mother tried to take her from daycare without permission. Thankfully the daycare center would not let them take her. If granted custody he plans to leave her with his mother in Michigan while he attends school in Minnesota. He has never asked to see her or even called to talk to her. The papers he has filed with the court are full of false statements, most of which start with "my mom said". My niece works full time and takes excellent care of her daughter. She has her in private school and an excellent daycare. They live with my sister where they each have their own bedrooms so that she can continue to afford the private school. Does he have any chance of winning custody?
