Legal Question in Family Law in Michigan

Single mother custody

I am a resident of Michigan and I am 6 months pregnant. The father of my child and I are not together and I am wondering what I should be doing to protect my custodial rights and what I can do to keep him from gaining custody of the baby. He has a drinking and drug problem and I need to know what kind of proof the courts will need to rule him unfit. I am currently live with my parents and am 20 attending college with a job. He is 19 with a job and his own apartment. What type of imppact will my financial situation have on the case and what should I do now to protect myself in the future and my baby?
