Legal Question in Civil Litigation in Michigan

Bail Repayment

I bailed someone out of jail, and she had told me she would pay me back. The bail payment went to settle her debts to the city for traffic tickets. She is refusing to pay me back. I do not have any documents or proof other than her word saying that she intended to pay me back originally. Is there any legal action I can take to collect what she owes me?

Re: Bail Repayment

Well, you can always sue her in small claims court. If she denies that you paid her bail, you might lose since she probably had the bond receipt in her name.

But, if she doesn't show up in court, you may get a default and then proceed to collect from her employer, bank, or tax refund. But it sounds like she is unemployed and stony broke.

A judgment is good for ten years and she may eventually come into some money.

Next time, make sure the bond receipt is in your name.
