Legal Question in Civil Litigation in Michigan

About 2 years ago a friend and I signed up to tour Europe after we graduated. Her parents paid for her trip and I covored my own expenses. After being in London for 3 days, my friend woke me up 4 hours before our bus was to leave for Paris, France, and told me that she could not get on the bus. I would have never signed up for a trip across Europe by myself, and I did not get on a bus to go to Paris with a bunch of strangers for 3 weeks, so I came home with my friend, as I did not sign up to travel Europe by myself. I did not have a contract with my friend stating that if she were to flake out that she would have to reimburse me for the trip, as I did not think one would be needed. We have been friends for 12 years now, and we are both mediators. There is a lot more:

2 weeks before we were to head to Europe she had an abortion (and even though I am strongly against doing so, I sat by her as a friend like I was supposed to). She bitched from the minute her boyfriend dropped us off at the airport to the minute he picked us up. She told me that she was home sick and that is why she couldn't continue on the trip, but her parents were on vacation in Colorado, and within 24 hours of being back her boyfriend went into rehab for being addicted to weed. We came back for nothing, and I am the one out of over $5000.00. I am wondering wether it would be worth it to sue her for $3407.66 for my flight and trip and take a loss on the other expenses? Would arbitration maybe work better in my favor, or are there any other options I might have? Any information woud be greatly appreciated!
