Legal Question in Landlord & Tenant Law in Michigan

My question is in regard to the state of Michigan. I was denied an apartment due to a non-violent, non-drug related misdemeanor. Is this legal? And why?

Persons are protected against discrimination by landlords for having characteristics that they are born with, or that are constitutionally protected rights. Characteristics such as race, color, nationality, familial status, children, marital status, and religious beliefs. Landlords are not required to accept tenants who are likely to cause trouble or fail to pay the rent. Irresponsible behavior, bad credit, and illegal activities are not protected by our constitution, as these are choices and people do not have a fundamental right to commit crimes, or refuse to pay their debts.
