Legal Question in Landlord & Tenant Law in Michigan

I rented a apartment in Dearborn, Mi. It costed $1760 every month. Before I moved in, I give them $1760 as deposit. However, when I moved out after 4 month. They said they need to replace the carpet because I damaged the carpet, so they won't return my $1760 deposit. There are about 5 apartment encounter the same situation. What should I do? I am a Chinese student studying here.
