Legal Question in Personal Injury in Michigan

Possible slander

I am a teacher at a small non-union school. Today my prinicpal presented me with a Letter of Reprimand. The accusations, among others, included insubordination, not following procedure, and threatening behavior to fellow staff. Everything outlined in the letter was false. I have never received anything less than outstanding teacher evaluations. I have never been informed verbally of any of the above charges. When asked for documentation and/or examples of the incidents, he could provide none. He said he wouldn't provide any details to protect people's confidentiality. I know beyond a doubt he has no proof. I did not sign the letter. When I refused to sign it, he said he would retype it and take out certain details, but it was still going in my permanent file. My question is how can I protect/defend myself against this? The accusations are so outrageous they would truly be damaging to my teaching career.

Re: Possible slander

Consider writing a certified letter confirming the details of the conversations you have had up to this point, and indicating that it is your expectation that under the circumstances no letter of reprimand will be included in your file. Consider also sending a copy of the letter to the school superintendent. Also know that if you send the letter, it may be included in your file.
