Legal Question in Personal Injury in Michigan

Last week the roads were very slippery I slid into a stop sign. No damage was done to my car and just a small dent on the stop sign pole. That afternoon when I arrived at home after work a police officer was waiting for me, said someone saw me hit the sign and reported by license number and that I left the scene of the accident. This morning I had to go to court and was fined $500.00 or three days in jail. I accepted the $500.00 fine as I could not afford to miss work I have not had a accident or ticket in the last 5 years. What is the definition of an accident?

Please inlighten ME.
