Legal Question in Wills and Trusts in Michigan

what do i do next

i have been a caretaker for 13 years lady never married/no children. i know im in the will family will not contact me as to what happenes next. probate says family only can be informed as to info. How long do i have befor i am to be notified of my inheritance. Do they legally have to contact me. and how much time do they have to do so. also, how can i find out if its in probate or if it is a trust? I do not know her lawers name. Is there any way legally i can find out who her lawyer was? She passed June of 2004. Thank you very much for your time.

The first thing you should do is see if a will was probated. If the lady had a trust, there is no probate court supervision and the whole thing may be distributed without any court involvement. You may only be speculating that you were left anything. If you are absolutely positive that you were left something and there is no probate, it is possible that the property was jointly owned with relatives, meaning that upon her death, it automatically passed to the relatives leaving nothing in the estate. See a lawyer to check all this out. William S. Stern 248-353-9400
