Legal Question in Wills and Trusts in Michigan

Inheritence

I've rec'd a portion of the $ that was left to me. I was told that there is a remaining bal. The att wants me to sign final rel. & ack receipt of $ (final bal). They won't send $ until I sign. Is it ok to sign even though I haven't actually rec'd the $ yet? Can't get $ unless I sign.

Re: Inheritence

You should not be expected to sign a document indicating you received money until you have received the money. You should not sign anything unless and until you have read and agree to the terms of the settlement. If there is an issue in any document, you can take it before the judge with a petition.

Re: Inheritence

I do not practice law in MI. I am a NH attorney. However, I follow the same procedure in New Hampshire for final receipts. The court here wants the recieipts on file before the funds are released. Yes, I do think it is strange, but they want to be sure that the recipient does not fail to sign the document, and holding the money hostage seems to work quite well.
