Legal Question in DUI Law in Minnesota

DWI plate impoundment and limited license

1. If I don't ever get the special plates, and just wait until my full license reinstatement (6 months), can I get regular plates at that time? Or will I still be required to get the WZ plates for the remainder of the year?

2. During the time of having a limited license, can I drive a company vehicle that has regular plates? Or does any car I drive have to have WZ plates on it?

3. After 6 months, when my license is fully valid, can I drive a company vehicle that has regular plates? Or does any car I drive have to have WZ plates on it for an entire year?

Thanks!

Re: DWI plate impoundment and limited license

I'll take a stab at your questions:

1. No.

2. I have never heard of the law being enforced, but 169A.37(5)seems to clearly say that you have to have special plates on every vehicle you dirve.

3. The way I read that statute, even the company car has to have the special plates for a full year. As I said, however, I have never seen this enforced.

Re: DWI plate impoundment and limited license

Your license plate impoundment lasts one year OR the length of your license revocation, whichever is LONGER. In your situation, it looks like that means your impoundment lasts for a whole year, even during the work permit period and even after you finish the entire revocation. Technically, during the entire year of impoundement you are supposed to only drive vehicles with WZ plates, but officers will rarely if ever enforce this as long as you are otherwise following the law (valid license, insurance, etc.).
