Can I be legally served and have to show up to court after receiving a notice from a law firm via regular post us mail stating I am to be in court at a specified date?

Depending on the nature of the papers you received, the answer is yes, you can be required to appear, although I would have to see the papers you received. As a general matter, you should consult an attorney about this, since you may be at risk of default if you do not submit a proper response before the hearing, and if you do not appear.
