Legal Question in Civil Litigation in Minnesota

My obligations...

I had sold a vehicle to a person. He hadn't registered it for tabs, or gotten the title switched yet.

He was pulled over for expired tabs. The vehicle that I sold him was in storage for over a year and I had not put tabs on it. When he was pulled over the officer found that he had no registration and the title was not in his name. So, the officer imponded the vehicle. He is threatening me that he is going to take me to small claims court. He is asking for the money for the impound fee, over due tabs, and the towing. Am I obligated to pay this.

Response: My understanding has always been that it is the driver's responsibility to see that the vehicle is properly licensed, registered, and insured. Your buyer should have registered the vehicle and obtained tabs for it before driving it. Unless he was stopped on his way home from your place on the day he purchased the car from you, it just is not your problem. You should not be held liable.
