Legal Question in Criminal Law in Missouri

Best way to Appeal Federal case

My friend was convicted of 1 count of possession of cocaine with intent to distribute. He has served 3 years and has 3 left in Leavenworth. What is the best way to go about winning an appeal to possibly get him released early? He has a free lawyer and I do not think he is pushing as hard as he can to win the appeal. What can I do to help this process. Can a paid lawyer do a better job?
