Legal Question in Family Law in Missouri

child support

My friend was unemployed for 5 months and therefore only made partial child support payments for those 5 months. Now that he is employed, his ex-wife's lawyer says he must make up what he did not pay during those 5 months. Is this true? I thought child support was based on income, and obviously his income while unemployed was less.
