Legal Question in Tax Law in Missouri

A child started living with me 1 1/2 yrs ago and her only parent will not help out at all. He was very neglectful to her and so I took her in. when ever she tries to ask her parent if he could help out with school expense he gets mad, so there is no help at all. I am just trying to see what I can do to help me, help her. I'm a single mother with 2 kids of my own so its not easy having another to raise but I would never let her go back to that way of life. Can you please advise me if I can claim her on ,y taxes?

I believe that a dependent can only be claimed if the person is your child or a qualified relative as that term is defined in the tax laws. You can learn more from the information found at the IRS web page www.irs.gov . Your only remedy may be to addopt the child. But, check out the information providedf by the IRS and see if there is another alternative. And, thanks for taking care of a person in need.
