Legal Question in Credit and Debt Law in Nebraska

Mentally ill persons and credit card debt.

My mother is a paronoid scizoidprenic (sp?) and widow. She is 68 and has gotten herself into bad credit card debt. What if anything can we do to help her? Recently a company garnished money from her checking account after her social security check was deposited. Debt collectors hassle her on the phone.

Re: Mentally ill persons and credit card debt.

I am not licensed to render legal advice in your state, but I recently read a Wall Street Journal article dealing with credit card companies exploiting the mentally ill. Sometimes they can be persuaded to revoke such unjust debts. Go to your local library and locate the article. It has several helpful examples - but the most important thing is to IMMEDIATELY make sure your mother hires a lawyer licensed to practice in your state. If she is already being garnisheed, any delay could be fatal to her case. I wish you the best.
