Stolen password question

The other evening I had a graduation party. A friend brought a relative visiting from out of town. I allowed this person to use my pc to check his e-mail. Today I went through the internet history of that account and found one of those xxx password sites. I also found an adult site that stated ''you have tried to gain access with a stolen password.'' It stated my IP address and ISP. It stated that this was being reported for fraud investigation to my ISP. Can this come back on me just because it happened from my IP address? Is this actually a serious crime? Should I even be worried about this? Thanks.

Re: Stolen password question

It doesn't sound like a police report has been filed, so there's no need to worry about criminal charges at the moment. Even if you are charged it would most likely be for attempted petty theft, though more serious charges might be involved. If law enforcement does get involved it should be easy enough to demonstrate you had a party that evening (make sure not to destroy any evidence, such as invitations and RSVP's -- even if they are all in electronic form). They likely will let it go at that point rather than expand an investigation of such a small offense.

All the site did was notify your ISP that someone on your computer (I presume your ISP can identify you with the information the site provided) typed in a stolen password. Chances are the ISP will do nothing more than start looking for a pattern of such access, and it very well might not do even that much. If it ever asks you about this incident, you can tell it about the party and that will likely be the end of the matter.
