Employee printed client file

I own a small day spa and recently found that someone printed the cleint file out when I was not there. Is taking a copy of the client list for their personal use illegal? The employees did not sign a non compete agreement, but the did certainly did not have my consent to print out the client base.

If you can establish the identity of the person who copied the data, you would have remedies; merely the threat of being sued is likely to result in the turnover of the print-out. Even absent any non-competition agreement, the misappropriation of your business' proprietary and confidential information is an actionable wrong....
