Legal Question in Business Law in New Jersey

I live in apartment complex. There are many buildings in that complex. I would like to make extra cash by offering local computer service. I am a computer expert with many years of experience. Is it ok if I post outside on columns, doors etc note that I offer the service, with my telephone number on it? Do I need to have any legal documents to do that, or am I free to do it?

Thank you for your LawGuru question. As noted in the prior another, your lease and rental rules and regulations are the starting point. But, you should also know, by doing what you plan to do, you'll be starting a business! It would be prudent to check zoning regulations is you plan to operate the business form your home. It would also be prudent to cosider things like (1) structing and regidtereing the business properly (e.g., sole proprietorship, LLC, etc.), (2) having a "form" written services agreement you can use with your customers, (3) determining whether a business licensse is needed (4) exploring insurance options..... and more. Please feel free to contact me ASAP so that we may get you on your way in your new busines and discuss protecting your interests. 973-921-0600.

Kindly note and remember that my response is merely a general comment on the law related to your question, and NOT legal advice or opinion. Also, your question and my response does NOT create an attorney-client relationship between us. You cannot rely upon what I have written, because I do not have all of the information that I need to advise you or render an opinion. Even simple facts you have not shared can completely change my answer. For me to give you legal advice or opinion, you would need to hire me to be your lawyer, and then we would need to discuss this in detail and go over the documents.

With best wishes,

As a Franchise Attorney I agree with the other attorney answers. The starting point is to review your lease for any advertising - solicitation restrictions. Next, contact your city hall for information on obtaining a business license. Consult with a good business or franchise attorney in your area for specific advice.
