Legal Question in Civil Rights Law in New Jersey

Rights to request documents

I recently had a case in municipal court that has now been heard and is over. I wrote to the court requesting an explanation of why they kept postponing my hearing for 1 1/2 years. I also requested all documents from my previous attorney pertaining to evidence requests. They responded that I need a lawyer to request documents about my case. Is this true? The reason I am requesting this information is because of suspected foul play by my previous attorney and evidence hiding from the courts.

Re: Rights to request documents

Defendants in Municipal Court are entitled to get discovery(records, evidence, ect.) pursuant to Court Rule 3:13-3. Additionally, under OPRA, The New Jersey Open Public Records Act, N.J.S.A. 47:1A-1 et seq., these records are available for public inspection. See http://www.state.nj.us/state/opra/
