Legal Question in Technology Law in New Jersey

Internet company, seeking business license answers

I am in the process of starting an internet company. I am located in New Jersey. Currently my company is not copyrighted nor incorperated. Do I need a New Jersy buisness license to start my company? Also, do I need to comply with any NJ Tax laws, such as sales tax (my company sells a web hosting service)? Thank you.

Yes, you should protect your business, and your personal assets with a form of business. It could be C corporation, subchapter S, or limited liability company. The form of the business will depend on your needs and goals for the business.

I would suggest that you speak to an attorney, and hire one to help set up the company. This attorney can then help you protect other important rights and draft proper contacts. Feel free to call me, I have a B.S. in computer science, and I was general counsel for a software company. I can be reached at 856-489-8888.

If you do not hire me, I would recommend that you consult an attorney so that you are properly protected.

Re: Internet company, seeking business license answers

First, you do not need a business license in NJ. Also, webhosting service is not subject to NJ sales tax.

If you are starting this business by yourself, you should probably have an attorney setup a single member Limited Liability Company. For additional guidance on this please see my choice of entity determinator at http://www.taxesq.com/choice.html

My web site also contains additional informaiton on setting up a business.

I hope this helps!
