Legal Question in Credit and Debt Law in New Jersey

Divorce and Credit Cards

In 2003, my husband took out a credit card and included my name as someone who has access to the card. We divorced in 2005. Now a credit card collection agency said that his last payment was 3/07 and he owes over $6,000. dollars. I was told that If I pay have, they will not take me to court and it will not effect my credit rating (I have great credit). Is there anyway I can be protected and not have to pay half, and not go to court and come out with my credit intact?
