Legal Question in Credit and Debt Law in New Jersey

I was loaned money by my now ex girlfriends mother.5000 dollars. She never had me sign a promissory note. When she gave me the money she said I don't care when you pay me back, you can give me 10 dollars a month whenever you want to and that would be fine. After her daughter and I broke up she had a lawyer write me a letter demanding the money. I called the lawyer and he said he knew nothing about the situation. She just asked him to write a letter to me. Her mother then emailed me asking about a payment plan. I said ten dollars a month would be silly so I offered her 25. She then said 25 was not enough and demanded 100 or she would take me to court. Am I supposed to give her 100? Can she really take me to court? What should I do?

You might want to speak to an attorney yourself. It sounds like you had a great case...until you started to handle this by yourself.
